Meet the Bread Necklace, Your New Favorite Drinking Accessory

By

We’ve all been there: You walk into a party and suddenly remember that you forgot to eat dinner. The hunger hits. With nary a potato chip in sight, you wander the kitchen looking for scraps as you mindlessly guzzle down your second and third drinks. You reluctantly leave the party in search of food and, by the time you’ve wolfed down the bodega special, you’re too tipsy and tired to return to the revelry. This could have all been avoided if only you’d had a snack on hand—or, even better, on neck. Sound familiar? Then you need a bread necklace.

A bread necklace is exactly what it sounds like. It’s a loaf of bread, sliced into small rounds and strung on kitchen twine. It leaves your hands free to hold a drink or high-five a friend (over how cool you look in a bread necklace), and ensures that no one can steal your snack without your permission.

If you think the bread necklace looks ridiculous, you’re absolutely right. But we recently took it for a spin and, we’re proud to say, it was a huge hit. We adorned our test subject with a French baguette necklace and let him loose in the crowd. Other party goers requested photos, asked for bites and complimented his general genius for thinking of such a innovative way to snack on the go.

Whether you’re at an all-day party, suffer from low blood sugar or just want an ice-breaking accessory, the bread necklace is for you. Here’s how to make one:

Tools:
Kitchen twine or craft string
Scissors
Serrated knife

Ingredients:
A loaf of bread, preferably something long and thin, like a crusty French baguette

Method:

  • Slice the loaf of bread into 1-inch pieces.
  • Thread the kitchen twine through the slices until the whole loaf is strung. You should be able to poke the string through the air pockets in the bread, but feel free to use a trussing needle if the bread is dense.
  • Cut the twine so it’s long enough to fit around your neck. Tie the ends together to secure it in place.
  • Wear you bread necklace in style. Its versatile look works with anything from a T-shirt and jeans to a sparkling cocktail dress.
