The 9 Best Beer-Tails For Game Day

By

Football season is officially underway, and with football season comes Sundays filled with drinking, eating, tailgating, and excessive celebration. To prepare for the deluge of snacks, cocktails and screaming at the TV, we drafted our favorite picks for beer-tails this football season. Each drink is straightforward to make, some can be pre-made or batched the day before, and all of them have beer as their number one ingredient. These nine cocktails are the perfect way to celebrate game day—aside from dancing in the end zone.

This is the obvious choice to serve at any football occasion. All you need is a bottle of your favorite booze and a six-pack of beer. If you want your party to be on the crazier side, opt for a high-proof dram like Wild Turkey 101. Or if you want to last past half-time without your guests angrily screaming at the TV every interception or foul, serve a spirit from the amari family (which will also help aide with the digestion of all that cheesy, greasy gameday snackage). For a Depth Charge, drop your shot into your beer before drinking it.

If you want your football party to go down in history for being the rowdiest gameday ever, make a few rounds of this beer-tail. Like a Jägerbomb loaded with caffeine (aka a NOS energy drink), this cocktail is guaranteed to amp up the party. To concoct, simply mix Bud Light with said energy drink, drop a shot of Jäger in the frosty mug and chug. Just make sure to limit your friends so they don’t accidentally smash your new TV when the other team scores a touchdown.

This gameday party drink is sweet, sour, loaded with beer, and the perfect accompaniment to salty snacks. Easy to make ahead of time, the Mexican Bulldog combines a frozen, blended Margarita with a healthy topper of Corona. Instead of using cheap mixers, opt for fresh lime and a homemade simple syrup. Serve with a heaping bowl of tequila-laden guacamole and your friends will want to come over for every game this season.

tequila
lime juice

If you’re looking for a decadent beer-tail for game day, look no further. Made with equal parts Guinness and Champagne, this classic cocktail is as smooth as its namesake. With a low ABV, this highbrow combo can be enjoyed all day long without getting you, or your guests, into too much trouble (or too much of a hangover).

A tiki drink for beer lovers, this tropical spritz is the perfect refresher to have on hand this football season. Essentially a Mai Tai with a heady topper of Miller High Life, the Satellite Swizzle is bracingly bitter, nutty and floral. Adjust the recipe for the amount of people being served, pour the drink from a pitcher, then garnish it with beer as you serve it.

This is the beer-tail for your football friends who love big, juicy, fruity beers. Made with fresh grapefruit juice, lime juice, grapefruit soda and grapefruit beer, the Paloma Perfecta is like a giant citrus bomb on your palate. Dangerously crushable and refreshing, this cocktail will need to be made by the pitcher.

Created by Roneria Caracas in NYC, this fiery Michelada variation is piquant perfection. Made with piloncillo, a raw unrefined sugar product from Mexico and the veins and seeds of jalapeños, the Caracas Michelada is a bold drink for a party. If your friends can handle the heat, this cocktail is the perfect companion to equally spicy gameday favorites like wings and nachos.

The Essentials

Papelón Picante
Lemon Juice
Mexican Pilsner

This is the perfect Michelada cocktail to make if you’re the type of party host that doesn’t like to be whipping up cocktails while the game is on. Made ahead of time, the Michelada Popsicle is exactly what it sounds like: a spicy tomato popsicle in a pint of beer. As the savory pop melts into your drink, your beer-tail becomes spicier and even more tomato-heavy. If you’re expecting a crowd, simply mix up the popsicles the night before, and serve straight from the freezer as your guests arrive.

The Essentials

Clamato Juice
Hot Sauce

As its name implies, this large format cocktail was designed with the game in mind. A combination of a Salty Dog and a Shandy, this punch is as easy to build as it is to drink. Made with a liter of Squirt (or your prefered grapefruit soda), a bottle of mezcal, limeade and beer, the Excessive Celebration Punch is refreshing and thirst-quenching. After a ton of salty snacks there’s no better way to cleanse your palate.

The Essentials

Mezcal
Squirt Soda
Corona
