5 Best Bourbon Cocktails

Some purists believe bourbon is too good for cocktails, but we have to respectfully disagree. America’s favorite whiskey is one of the most versatile spirits in our bartending book, and these cocktails are a testament to just how well its flavors meld with a plethora of ingredients. Here, the top bourbon cocktails every home bartender needs to master.

Bourbon wasn’t always the star spirit in the Mint Julep. In fact, when this cocktail was first created in the late 18th century, bourbon hadn’t yet been invented. A century later, though, bourbon took the place of Cognac and peach brandy in the icy cocktail. As the official cocktail of the Kentucky Derby, it’s estimated that 125,000 are sold every year at Churchill Downs.

That said, this classic is perfect anytime, especially when garnished with a rich, quality brandied cherry.

The Old Fashioned, a simple mix of whiskey, sugar and bitters, was once king in the cocktail world. In the 1990s, it fell out of fashion when bright, fruity drinks like the Cosmopolitan reined supreme. Luckily, the craft cocktail revival of the early aughts restored the drink to its rightful place in the classic cocktail hall of fame. We suggest mixing one up with a high-proof bourbon for an amped up Old Fashioned experience.
