6 Sweet, Tart and Tasty Blackberry Cocktails

By

While strawberries, raspberries and blueberries all make great additions to a fruit salad, it’s blackberries that we love most in boozy, fruity concoctions. Sweet and only a touch tart, the berries add a hit of fresh flavor to any drink, as well as a dark and alluring color rarely found in the bright beverages of the warmer months. Here, our favorite blackberry cocktails to make the most of fresh berries and blackberry liqueur.

If you love blackberries so much, why don’t you marry them? This Mason jarred cocktail was designed to show off the best of the summer fruit. It’s made with fresh muddled berries and Pimm’s Blackberry & Elderflower liqueur (along with gin, Lillet Blanc and Sprite) in an easily transportable package, perfect for a summer wedding. We think it makes a mighty boozy celebration of blackberries whether you’re saying “I do” or “I do want another, barkeep.”

La Croix Muré Pepino, the buzzy brand’s unsweetened blackberry cucumber soda, is a great way to enjoy a fizzy refresher that won’t leave you feeling bloated with added sugar. But we like it even better with extra booze and crème de mûre (blackberry liqueur) for total blackberry overload. The coconut takes a backseat to the sweet-tart berry, becoming a dry undertone that elevates the entire cocktail. Adding lemon and St. George Green Chile vodka keeps the soda light and deepens the flavor with a satisfying vegetal bite.

Blackberries and popsicles are two of the great joys of summer, so combining them with a helping of booze makes for a warm weather power trio. Add blueberries to the mix and you’ve got a flavorful foursome of juicy goodness. A hibiscus-infused syrup is mixed with the blended berries, spiked with tequila and frozen solid for grab-and-go boozing. Seriously sweet and icy, these pops will help you find your summer bliss.

A jammy red wine can work wonders on the blackberry, turning the simple, sweet joy into a complex flavor bomb. In this take on a Moscow Mule, that earthy full-fruit combo is intensified even further with ginger beer—which adds spicy zing to the tart mixture—and maraschino liqueur, which enhances the floral sweetness.

If it were up to us, every neighborhood lemonade stand would stock fresh blackberries to upgrade the simple beverage with a dose of sweet berries (we would happily add the booze ourselves). Caramel-packed bourbon is an obvious partner for lemonade and a total summer porch staple. But blackberries make the drink feel just a touch fancier, like you’re drinking on a really nice porch, with a structurally sound floor and everything.

The bright flavors of a traditional Bulldog (essentially a Frozen Margarita topped with a bottle of Mexican lager) certainly put a pep in your step. But for more profound satisfaction, look no further than this deep purple take on the hybrid beer-tail. Mezcal, lime, agave nectar and fresh blackberries get blended into a sweet, smoky and fruity slush before a bottle of porter is flipped into the drink to slowly infuse all sorts of bitter, chocolatey tones that mesh perfectly with the mezcal cocktail.

blackberries
