6 Cocktails to Celebrate Cinco de Derby

By

You may be familiar with Chrismukkah, when Hanukkah and Christmas collide, but this year we also celebrated the double whammy of Valentine’s Day and Ash Wednesday (Valentine’s Wednesday?) and Easter on April Fool’s Day (Easter Fool’s Day, maybe). And who could forget Maha Shivratri on top of Mardi Gras (Mardi Shivratri flows pretty well we think)? But it’s the upcoming overlap that we’re most excited about: The Kentucky Derby and Cinco de Mayo both fall on May 5, forming the Voltron holiday known as Cinco de Derby. Americans have adopted both of these holidays as opportunities to drink a few celebratory cocktails, so we gathered our best drinks to serve both occasions, whether you’re throwing a dual-purpose party or you just like to be inclusive with your boozy holidays.

This massive mezcal punch contains enough booze and cheer to fuel two parties, and it’s easy enough to throw together between races and rounds of tequila shots. A bottle of the agave spirit is joined by Corona (or your preferred Mexican lager), frozen limeade and Squirt for a citrusy, grapefruity party drink. Serve with plenty of salty snacks of whatever theme you like.

The Old Fashioned and the Kentucky Derby originated in the same era, and today both are seen as quintessential Americana. But the magic of the Old Fashioned is not its reliance upon American whiskey, but rather its faultless structure, which allows you to swap in any spirit you please for a satisfying cocktail. This mezcal and tequila-spiked version is a celebration of Mexican spirits and American form—but none of that really matters because after one sip, all you’ll be thinking about is how good it tastes.

A whiff of this hot, smoky, herbal, grapefruit and ginger-spiced concoction may initially make you think there’s mezcal lurking in its depths, but really it’s moonshine that gives the fizzy sipper its mule-like kick. Those smoky vapors are emanating from the drink’s garnish of singed grapefruit, which perfectly complements the bright flavors of the white whiskey, lime juice and ginger beer. Herbal notes are added with a rosemary sprig, which brings a green freshness to the whole package.

From afar, this may look like any other Moscow Mule. But get to know the Mexi-Cali spinoff of the classic American cocktail, and you’ll find it a good deal spicier than the tame copper-hulled original. That spice comes courtesy of Ancho Reyes Verde green chile liqueur, which is rocketed into your mouth by bubbly ginger beer. The drink practically explodes with fresh, vegetal flavors and tingling heat, tamed only a touch by a sprig of cilantro for grassy texture.

When you need to double down on holiday beverages, grab two glasses. The Boilermaker, the go-to choice for indecisive types the world over, is easily adaptable to any combo of flavors. For Cinco de Derby, pair a shot of bourbon with a Tecate, or opt for a tequila shot alongside your American lager. This mix and match style will satisfy every weekend partier, no matter where they fall on the Cinco de Derby spectrum.

Don’t bother choosing between whiskey and tequila. Just dump them into a single glass (along with gin and rum for good measure), mix it up with some blue curaçao and lemon and lemon-lime soda, and you’ve got yourself a cocktail to celebrate any and every holiday. Just be sure to wave adios to your friends before you all down the extra strong beverage. You’ll see them May 6, on the far side of the Cinco de Derby rager.

The Essentials

all clear spirits
blue curaçao
lemon-lime soda
