Energy Drink Cocktails to Keep You Up All Night

By

Sometimes a jolt of caffeine is the only thing that gets you off the couch and on the town come Friday night. But if you’re trying to do double duty and pregame while you power up, there’s only one path to take: Welcome to the buzzy, turnt up world of energy drink cocktails.

“A lot of the best parties happen late at night, and I want to be awake for them,” says Steph Russ, bartender and author of Energy: Cocktails to Get You UP, a cocktail book filled entirely with insane caffeinated cocktails that will definitely keep you alert and party-ready all night long. “When it comes to energy drinks, there's something for everyone. Whether you're preparing for an extreme sporting event or fighting that 2 o'clock feeling, there’s an energy cocktail for you.”

Russ looks past the basic Red Bull-Vodka and gets creative with her eye-opening cocktails. “I always like to try new things so that I don't get stuck on any one energy drink, especially because there are so many different types on the market right now,” she says. She uses a wide variety of stimulating options—each of which packs a different type of kick—to tailor the cocktails to best suit every situation. “If I know I'm going to a warehouse party or something that will run super late, I pour heavier on the stimulants,” she says. “If I just need a little boost, I add less of the energy drink or use a milder stimulant like tea.”

Here, four of Russ’s favorite cocktail recipes from Energy. Mix one up the next time you’re feeling sluggish.

“This is a very popular drink that’s often on the menu at my pop-up bars,” says Russ. “It’s a faux upscale take on the ‘Cactus Cooler’ shot, inspired by the celeb-filled town of Calabasas, California.” Even if you’re not hobnobbing with Kim and Kanye in the glitzy L.A. ‘hood, this cocktail will instantly transport you to a state of hopped up, poolside bliss. The tropical fruit flavors of Red Bull Yellow Edition marry perfectly with San Pellegrino’s effervescent, blood-orange flavored Aranciata soda.

“This is like the monster truck rally of Jägerbombs,” says Russ. “I created this drink with hard-partying motorsports fans in mind and wanted to take the Jägerbomb a step further by including beer mixed with NOS, which has about 160 milligrams of caffeine per can.” The orange soda-y flavor of the NOS adds a flavorful kick to the light beer, giving the whole Depth Charge more body and flavor than you might expect. Guzzle a round before the big game to get everyone fired up.

When the average drip coffee isn’t enough to get your tired body out of bed in the morning, it’s time to kick that cup into overdrive. “Java Monster is one of my favorite coffee-flavored energy drinks on the market,” says Russ. “It's creamy and sweet enough to be used in place of cream and sugar in your coffee, and it adds an additional stimulant boost to your usual breakfast blend.” She mixes the java-flavored energy drink with black coffee, Kahlúa and vodka for an over-the-top brunchtail. If you really want to wake up on the right side of the bed, we suggest using our killer homemade coffee liqueur in place of Kahlúa.

“This cocktail is an energized take on the traditional Cosmopolitan, which is perfect for outdoor day parties when the weather is nice,” Russ says. “I use the Red Bull Red Edition, a cranberry-flavored energy drink, in place of cranberry juice to spice up the classic.” Depending on how well-stocked your 24-hour mini mart, gas station or other energy drink procurement center is, you might not find the full range of Red Bull Edition flavors. That’s okay. We used regular old Red Bull in this frozen delight, and it tasted just as great.

Vodka
triple sec
Red Bull
