The Gimlet and the Daiquiri not only share an almost identical recipe of spirit + sugar + lime, but they also share an origin story: Both drinks have roots onboard 18th century British Navy ships, where sailors were given daily rations of booze and limes. The limes were used to prevent scurvy (and are the source of “Limey” as a nickname for a Brit), while the booze was (incorrectly!) thought of as a rejuvenating agent. Ever enterprising, the men would combine the gin and lime with a dash of sugar, or the rum and lime with a dash of sugar, thereby laying the groundwork for what we know today as the Gimlet and the Daiquiri, respectively.
Both drinks are terrific warm-weather sippers—bright, citrusy and refreshing, and, in the case of the Gimlet, layered with pleasing botanical accents.
Here’s the Gimlet recipe in all its glorious simplicity:
- 2 oz gin
- .75 oz fresh lime juice
- .75 oz simple syrup
- Add gin, lime juice and simple syrup to a shaker tin filled with ice.
- Shake to combine and chill.
- Strain into a chilled Coupe glass and garnish with a lime twist.*
