Settle in with a Lynchburg Lemonade, the Perfect Back-Porch Sipper

In 1980, a bar owner in Huntsville, Alabama, named Tony Mason mixed up Jack Daniel’s with sour mix and 7up, and called his creation a Lynchburg Lemonade. (Lynchburg, Tennessee, is home to Jack Daniel’s.) Three years later, after Jack Daniel’s started promoting the drink without even mentioning Mason, much less compensating him, Mason sued the whiskey behemoth and won. Well, sort of: The judge in the case awarded Mason a single dollar (from the judge’s own pocket) in damages. Ouch. Jack Daniel’s prevailed in a subsequent legal wrangle and the drink spread throughout the southeast and eventually the country. Score one for the big guy.

Mason’s original recipe verges on the sickly sweet, so we switched it up with fresh lime juice and lemonade (go for homemade if you can). Here’s our spin:

Ingredients |

  • 2 oz Tennessee whiskey
  • .75 oz triple sec
  • .25 oz simple syrup
  • .25 oz fresh lime juice
  • Lemonade, to top
Method |
  • Add whiskey, triple sec, simple syrup and lime juice to a shaker tin with ice.
  • Shake to combine and chill.
  • Strain into a glass filled with fresh ice (and a lemon wheel or two).
  • Top with lemonade, and garnish with a lemon wheel.
