This Beloved Child Star Has Gone Full Hipster

By

Dylan Sprouse, once an innocent child star, has taken a turn down a dark path. Fallen in with a bad crowd, you might say. What we’re trying to say is, he’s making mead. In (:::shudder:::) Brooklyn.

Depending on your age, you’ll either recognize Dylan Sprouse as Julian “Frankenstien” McGrath in Big Daddy or as Zack, the cool but rude twin in the Disney Channel’s The Suite Life of Zack & Cody. Those late to the Sprouse game might know him from The Suite Life on Deck, Disney’s nautical follow up to the hotel-based kid-com. But while he might have been a nigh-on-perfect manifestation of the mischievous-but-fundamentally-good-natured-Disney-imp archetype, it appears he has now gone full hipster. We lose a few in every generation.

The 24-year-old actor-turned-brewer is opening All-Wise Meadery in Williamsburg’s William Vale Hotel this spring. “We want to bring mead to people as this new alcohol with an old history,” Sprouse told Bedford + Bowery. He plans on producing dry meads with unusual flavors like tobacco but using a traditional method. That method? “Putting it inside a tank and letting it sit.” It’s so crazy it just might work.

The brewery describes itself on Instagram as “an all American, locally sourced Micro-Meadery and bar run by heathens.” And they mean that literally. As Sprouse explained to B+B, “I’m a Heathen. It’s like a German pagan thing, I’ve been that since I was 15 years old.”

Sprouse has not abandoned on-screen life either. He and his business partners are currently pitching a reality show called Mead in America. While we’ll definitely watch it (we’ve always said there’s not enough mead-based programming on television today), we think they should have gone with The Mead Life of Zack & His Magical Viking Drinking Horn.
