The bitter Italian amari may not be your go-to spirits for Jello Shots, but they’re potent, flavorful and will leave a lasting impression on your party guests. The first layer is a blend of Pomegranate Jell-O and Campari—a fruity, herbal blend that works surprisingly well together—while the final layer is an unforgiving Fernet-based kick in the pants. Complete with a sweet, milky white layer in between, this powerful shot will turn heads and take names.

Ingredients

1 packet Jell-O
.25 Cup Campari
2 packets Knox unflavored gelatin
7 oz sweetened condensed milk
.5 Cup Fernet
.25 Cup sugar
2.75 cups cold water, divided
1.5 cups hot water, divided

Method

  • For the red jello, combine 1.5 cups of boiling water with Pomegranate Jell-O mix in a bowl. Stir until dissolved. Add .25 cup Campari and .5 cup cold water. Fill the shot glasses or baking dish one-third of the way full with the jello mix. Refrigerate for an hour and a half.
  • For the white jello, combine the unflavored gelatin with .75 cup cold water in a saucepan over medium heat. Stir until dissolved. Add sweetened condensed milk and mix thoroughly. Fill the shot glasses or baking dish two-thirds of the way full with the white gelatin mix. Refrigerate for at least an hour.
  • For the black layer, sprinkle a packet of unflavored gelatin over 1.5 cups cold water in a saucepan and let sit for a few minutes. Heat over low heat, stirring, until the gelatin starts to dissolve. Add .25 cup sugar and stir until dissolved. Cool until the mixture is just warm. Stir in the Fernet. Fill the shot glasses or baking dish the remaining third of the way and refrigerate until fully set (about 2 hours).
