Stubborn Burro

At Stoke in Charlotte, North Carolina, bartenders combine moonshine with ginger beer, lime and grapefruit for their take on a Moscow Mule. It’s a drink that won’t let go of your taste buds until long after the last sip.

Note: At Stoke, they garnish the Stubborn Burro with a grapefruit quarter roasted in their wood-fire oven. At home, you can simply broil halved grapefruits with a dusting of brown sugar, or just use a fresh grapefruit quarter.

1.5 oz moonshine
2 oz Fresh Grapefruit Juice
.5 oz Fresh lime juice
3.5 oz Ginger Beer
Oven-roasted grapefruit quarter, for garnish
Rosemary sprig, for garnish


  • Add moonshine, grapefruit juice and lime juice to a rocks glass filled with ice and stir.
  • Top with ginger beer.
  • Garnish with oven-roasted grapefruit quarter and rosemary sprig.
