A classic tiki cocktail originally created by Donn “Don the Beachcomber” Beach, the Navy Grog is much stronger than the grogs of naval history. It’s a potent mix of citrus juice, three types of rum and honey syrup—if you are following Beach’s original recipe. Another version, which replaced the honey syrup with demerara syrup and allspice dram, appeared on Trader Vic’s menus across the country—including at the Washington D.C. location where President Richard Nixon reportedly enjoyed a grog or two. Regardless of which tiki legend’s recipe you opt for, the drink’s defining characteristic is an ice cone, which surrounds the straw and pokes out of the grog like a pointy witch’s hat.
- Add all ingredients to a shaker with ice and shake well.
- Fill a double old-fashioned glass about halfway with crushed ice (made with a mallet and Lewis bag if you have it).
- Strain the cocktail into the double old-fashioned glass over the crushed ice.
- Garnish with an ice cone, set just so on the mound of crushed ice, and thread a straw through the hole.
Mix it Up
To make Trader Vic’s version of the cocktail, swap out the honey syrup and seltzer water for .5 oz of demerara syrup and .25 oz of allspice dram.
