What to Mix with Coconut Rum

By

It doesn’t matter how you came to own it, that bottle of coconut rum isn’t going to drink itself. But you don’t have to make complicated cocktails or big batches of punch to use it up. Simply pour an ounce or two into a glass, add ice and top it off with one of these mixers.

Pineapple Juice

It’s a no-brainer. Pineapple juice and coconut rum are a match made in island heaven. Think of it like an ersatz Mai Tai. If you want to make it fancy, use fresh pressed pineapple juice. Then sit back, close your eyes and tell Siri to play ocean sounds.

Coca-Cola

Give your Rum & Coke a tropical twist by swapping in coconut rum for the usual white, gold or dark rum. For the best results, use Mexican Coke made with real sugar, which will boost the coconut flavors in the rum and make for a much more satisfyingly sweet finish.

Hot Chocolate

Come winter, don’t feel like you have to bury your bottle of coconut rum in the depths of your pantry. Let it shine in creamy hot cocoa. If you’re really feeling fancy, top the whole thing off with a big dollop of homemade coconut milk whipped cream.

Fresh Orange Juice

Store-bought OJ and coconut rum can come off a bit cloying. But if you mix the sweet spirit with tangy, fresh-squeezed orange juice, you’ll have yourself a balanced drink that requires only the smallest of efforts. For maximum tastiness, shake this mix with a couple of ice cubes before straining it into a glass over fresh ice. That way, the rum will fully incorporate into the juice.

Mango Nectar

Grab a can of creamy mango nectar, shake it with some coconut rum, strain it into a glass and sip away on your sweet treat. It’s almost like a tropical dessert. If you want to take it even further into confectionary territory, try blending the rum and nectar together with ice for a frosty frozen mango Daiquiri wannabe.

Coconut Water

Double down on that good coconut flavor by mixing coconut rum with coconut water. While you should feel free to mix with your favorite brand, we highly recommend CoAqua, which almost tastes like a low-cal Piña Colada. Brands like Harmless Harvest and Vita Coco are delicious as well.

Cold Brew

Skip the Irish Coffee come summer. Instead spike your cold brew coffee with a little coconut rum for sweetness and tropicality. If you’re willing to add a third ingredient to your ultra-simple drink, try a splash of coconut milk. Decadent doesn’t even begin to cover it.
